Cleopatra

The last Pharaoh

Em hotep! I am wishing you peace and happiness. I am Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt. My father was the Egyptian Pharaoh before me, but our family was actually from Greece.

I loved Egypt and even learnt tospeak Egyptian. I wanted to be a true Egyptian queen!

When I became queen I had to share the throne with my little brother. That is, until he banished me! So of course I raised an army to fight and reclaim my kingdom, but no need! He had upset Julius Caesar, the powerful Roman, so much that Caesar had him killed. Just like that I was Queen again. No more sharing either. I became great friends with Caesar.

Years later I met with another Roman leader, Mark Antony. I wanted to look dazzling, so I sailed on a golden ship, dressed as the goddess Isis. It was like an amazing dream come true!

Eventually I lost a battle at sea to the Romans, and they were coming for me - to walk me through their streets as a triumph, or a prize. I told myself, “I won’t let them take me alive!” I held a small yet deadly snake, an asp, at my chest until it bit me, and so I died.

Cleopatra was extremely intelligent.

She spoke several languages and studied mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy.

Plutarch, an ancient writer, wrote that Cleopatra had a sweet voice, and she could be very convincing to listen to.

Because of earthquakes and tsunamis, Cleopatra’s Palace, where she lived, is now underwater.
